FAKE NEWS AND ITS PHENOMENA

With an increase of social media, Yellow journalism became a dark fabric to our society where these journalists deliberate in misleading information and giving hoaxes to us. Claire Wardle, a researcher and director of First Draft News, identified three types of informative pollutions by fake news:

  • Mis-information: where false information is disseminated without harmful intent.

  • Dis-information: It is created and shared by people with harmful intent.

  • Mal-information: when there is sharing of "genuine" information in a mala fide way to cause harm.

A fake news phenomenon is a process of spreading lies, where information bots are used to act like a human and bots are very hard to be identified. Though they aren’t the only culprit, as bots only start the fire, the main key for spreading hoax news is users of social media who lack human understanding.

And circular reporting also causes the risk of fake news, for example; people refer to the wiki for instant information where anyone can edit articles. Thus it’s not a trustworthy source. And suppose if someone publishes an article taken from Wikipedia in a newspaper, then both got their proof of news from each other. Thus creating confusion and impossible to prove its truthfulness. This cycle is called circular reporting, where no one knows the origin of the story.

So, how can we get rid of fake news? For that, we have to identify it, and It is straightforward, as all fake news have at least one of four things in common, which are:-

  1. On reading an article you will get a strong emotional reaction as good journalism should create emotions similarly bad journalism needs your feelings to overcome your thoughts. Thus,  forcing you to take actions in a passion that is filled by the article;

  2. In many news you see stories, which are totally ridiculous but it will perfectly correlate with your beliefs; therefore you will be forced to share it with your friends as soon as possible;

  1. Many news and advertisements are created to make you spend money on them, so you have to identify misleading information and spend money wisely.

  1. At last, on reading the article, you will get an urge immediately, to amplify the story by sharing it with your friends, families and followers which raises the stakes of news if it’s a misleading one;

These characteristics can help you to identify and exterminate hoax news.

We cannot underestimate the strength of fake news because it causes scuffles, and many unacknowledged skirmishes are going to be caused by these hoaxes.

Therefore, you have to be more vigilant, as

“A lie can travel halfway around the world, while the truth is putting on its shoes.”
